Assessment for Learning
In many ways, assessment for learning (or formative assessment) is about connection: in the learner, with the learning, and with the teaching. It is about gathering information relating to students’ learning as learning journey tasks/activities are undertaken and where feedback relating to emerging understandings and difficulties can be given. It serves to highlight where teaching might need to be modified or changed. Most importantly, it occurs as learning is progressing. Effective assessment for learning is dependent on specific learner capabilities, not the least of which is knowing that there is a question: where am I going? This question honours the learner as a key stakeholder in the learning process. There are two more questions: is this learning experience getting me there? How am I doing? These two focus on the authenticity of learning tasks and on feedback to support the next stages of learning, and they complete the cycle of connection. In this Learning Space you will focus on making connections between all three elements. One hour of one-to-one coaching focused entirely on work generated by this learning space is included.
