Creating the BIG Question
Instead of merely ‘covering’ material, students UNcover and REcover important ideas in context. ~ Grant Wiggins
The Essential Question is pretty much the difference between whether we are playing trivial pursuit in our classrooms, or whether we are aiming for a higher level of illumination. Known variously as guiding questions, fertile questions (which expresses the concept quite nicely in an organic way and which also sits comfortably with the view of learning as being organic), essential questions are centred on rich concepts and require complex thinking as they are investigated and inquired into. Moreover, in the course of the quest to find an answer, they generate subsidiary questions that serve to build up a body of material with which the learner engages. Through engaging with an essential question the learner is able to interrogate content which includes all of the concepts, themes, issues, problems and theories that reside within it. And in doing so the learner makes connections between life experiences, prior knowledge and new learning to arrive at deeper understandings. In this Learning Space you will explore the nature and purposes of essential questions, and practise constructing them. One hour of one-to-one coaching focused entirely on work generated by this learning space is included.
