Higher Order Thinking: Introduction
Even though thinking is largely invisible, its connection with learning is unquestionable. Through the use of thinking skills models, structures and strategies we can gain valuable insights into students’ understanding and learning – pictures of their thinking, if you like. It has been said that 'learning is not a spectator sport.' To this end, high order thinking enables students to move outside their comfort zones – to take risks and try out new ideas, to experience freedom of thought, to shake off constraints and to move into their futures with all-important life skills. This Learning Space introduces several models, structures and strategies found in 21st Century pedagogies for the teaching of high order thinking skills (HOTs) to enrich learning, making it active and inspiring.
